Probiotic Smoothie

Since the advent of antibiotics and factory food our friendly bacteria in the digestive tract has been weakened, making it more easily overwhelmed by bad bacteria. The result is that our health overall has been challenged.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick has done extensive research on aging, cancer, and nutrition. She says about 70% of your immunes live in your gut and collectively our microbiomes are in trouble which seems to be related to most disease.

Rather than resort to medications which can be problematic, many smart people are turning to a daily smoothie for help. Here is a recipe you can modify to suit yourself:

Bananas are rich in potassium and fiber and may help prevent asthma, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and digestive problems.  Bananas are rich in potassium which helps maintain fluid levels in the body and regulates the movement of nutrients and waste products in and out of cells. Potassium also helps muscles to contract and nerve cells to respond. It keeps the heart beating regularly and can reduce the effect of sodium on blood pressure. Potassium may reduce the risk of kidney stones forming as people age. In turn, healthy kidneys make sure that the right amount of potassium is kept in the body.

Beets are low in fat, high in fiber and rich in essential minerals and antioxidants that help combat free radicals in your body and contain valuable nutrients that may help lower your blood pressure, fight cancer and inflammation, boost your stamina, and support detoxification.

Cabbage is a natural probiotic which decreases the risk of diabetes, obesity, and overall mortality. It can also help promote a healthy complexion, increased energy, and overall lower weight. Cabbage may help protect against radiation, prevent cancer, and reduce heart disease risk.

Carrots, raw - very low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol,a good source of Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate and Manganese, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K and Potassium. Carrots have the ability to improve the skin, boost the immune system, improve digestion, protect cardiovascular health, detoxify the body, and boost oral health, and eating per day improves eyesight and reduces risk of several kinds of cancer.

Flax seed's health benefits come from the fact that it's high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as phytochemicals called lignans. One tablespoon (7 grams) of ground flaxseed contains 2 grams of polyunsaturated fatty acids (includes the omega 3s), 2 grams of dietary fiber and 37 calories.

Flax seed is commonly used to improve digestive health or relieve constipation. Flaxseed may also help lower total blood cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol levels, which may help reduce the risk of heart disease.
You can buy flax seed in bulk — whole or ground — at many grocery stores and health food stores. Refrigerating may extend freshness. Whole seeds can be ground in a coffee grinder and then stored in an airtight container for several months.

Vitamin C helps to repair and regenerate tissues, protect against heart disease, aid in the absorption of iron, prevent scurvy, and decrease total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides. Research indicates that vitamin C may help protect against a variety of cancers by combating free radicals, and helping neutralize the effects of nitrites (preservatives found in some packaged foods that may raise the risk of certain forms of cancer).

Broccoli sprouts contain an abundance of myrosinase, an enzyme needed for formation of sulforaphane, which is mature broccoli’s cancer-fighting, anti-inflammatory component. Eating two-and-a-half ounces of broccoli sprouts daily for two months may protect against Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), bacteria known to cause gastritis, ulcers and stomach cancer.

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients which have powerful health benefits. Considered a superfood, they can also help improve brain health, promote weight loss, and soothe inflammation.
